Meet Caroline Hakes, member of NeW at the George Washington University.
What were some of your favorite events that you participated in with NeW?
I enjoyed hearing Dana Perino discuss her new book at NeW’s book club kick-off and share her advice to young women. It was amazing to have the opportunity to send her a note and get a response back! I was also honored to be asked to share my internship experiences with younger chapter members during an internship panel on campus. I looked up to the seniors in NeW when I was a freshman, so it was fun to have it all come full circle.
What are your plans after graduation?
I will be an analyst at Targeted Victory in their political department.
What advice would you give to a conservative woman starting college?
Besides recommending wholeheartedly that they join NeW, I would advise taking the time to really learn about conservative principles. Listen to podcasts like “Wall Street Journal’s Potomac Watch” or “The Dispatch” and read publications like “National Review” and the “Wall Street Journal” editorial page. It will prepare you so well to argue your perspective. But don’t forget to read up on the opposing viewpoint because understanding where your liberal peers are coming from creates a more productive dialogue. Good luck!
How has NeW impacted you and prepared you for your next steps?
I had the privilege to write an essay for the “She’s Conservative” book and share my experience as a conservative college woman with several media outlets. I even got to speak at the book launch party, which was my first time giving a speech in front of strangers! I am so grateful to NeW Founder Karin Agness and Communications Manager Kathryn Alford for giving me the opportunity to learn how to navigate a media interview and help further NeW’s mission.
Why is NeW important to you?
NeW gave me the opportunity to connect with like-minded women my age on a college campus that is overwhelmingly liberal. NeW became almost like a conservative sorority to me. I was so grateful to make those friendships. I know they will last me a lifetime.
