Ah, the peak of summer: BBQs, heat, and some much-needed relaxation before the craziness of fall. What better way to enjoy the end of summer than to spend a weekend on the beautiful Bryn Mawr campus at NeW’s Young Women’s Leadership Retreat? This will be my first retreat with NeW and I am so excited for great discussions and fellowship with other conservative women from around the nation.
Looking over the materials for the retreat, I can’t help but get excited for some great policy lectures and discussions, ranging from health care policy to free speech. I personally cannot wait to hear from Sheila Tate, Nancy Reagan’s press secretary and author of the new book Lady in Red. She is sure to share some personal stories from her experience working with the Reagans and insights she has learned as working as a press secretary. Also, it’s not every day you get to meet and hear from the author of a book on your summer reading list!
Additionally, the retreat will offer more intimate discussions regarding free speech on campuses. Lectures and Q&A are wonderful, but nothing beats what you can learn from others in small-group discussion. I hope that these conversations will inspire myself and the other young women to return to our campuses and encourage greater political dialogue.
In preparation for the new academic year, NeW will also be offering professional development workshops, covering everything from public speaking to interviews and resume building. These will offer great opportunities to refine professional skills and learn from each other.
While the scheduled events of the retreat offer a lot to be excited for, I am most excited to meet other conservative women from around the nation and build friendships. With the many fun evening activities planned, there will be plenty of time for socializing.
