This March, our NeW Ambassadors celebrate Women’s History Month by telling us about the conservative women who inspire them from the past or present day. Our Ambassador Katherine Mickelson told us why Margaret Thatcher inspires her.
One historical woman that continues to inspire me is Margaret Thatcher. Thatcher was a British stateswoman and Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990.
She advocated for personal freedom and helped fight the spread of socialism in Britain. Thatcher developed a close friendship with President Reagan and even earned the praise of Gorbachev. The “Iron Lady” helped end the Cold War with her uncompromising politics. She stuck to her values and paved the way for women to take positions of power in Europe.
Thatcher was a woman of class and embodied her saying “Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.” She didn’t allow societal limits to tell her she had to choose between being a loving mother and having a successful career.
She inspires many women that they can create a loving home while simultaneously achieving national success. During women’s history month, it’s essential to reflect on her powerful quote “If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.”
