Leader Spotlight: Jess Jacobs, NeW at Catholic University

Meet Jess Jacobs, Treasurer of NeW at the Catholic University of America.

How did you first hear about NeW?
I first heard about NeW at our fall student organization fair. I was really excited to find a club that was filled with other young women who hold similar beliefs and share similar experiences with me. The other young women in NeW were so supportive of me and helped to make sure that every freshman was settling into college life and learning how to navigate campus.

Why is having a NeW chapter on campus so important to you?
NeW at Catholic University is important to me because I want to be able to welcome other students into a supportive and encouraging environment where they are able to express themselves and their beliefs. Many people say that college is a time when students become liberal; however, with NeW, I have been welcomed into a community of young women that support my conservative values.

What has been your favorite memory or event with NeW?
My favorite event with NeW was during my first semester of freshman year. This event was to celebrate NeW’s birthday. I remember feeling super welcomed by each of the upper-classmen. This event was held at the beginning of the school year and was the warm welcome to CUA that many of my friends and I needed. I also really enjoyed hosting speaker Romina Boccia for a discussion on the women’s wage gap.

Why is NeW important?
NeW is important to because it demonstrates that conservative values are not constrained by age or gender. NeW has given me the opportunity to befriend many other strong, conservative women and to learn more about policy issues that I had never considered prior to being a part of this amazing program. I hope that in my next several semesters at CUA, I will be able to grow our chapter and spread this program throughout our campus.

What advice would you give other conservative women on campus?
I would tell other conservative women that they are not alone. Although it can be easy to feel isolated in our beliefs, there is a whole organization of women who are supportive and compassionate about conservative values. I hope that other women on campus recognize and join NeW because we are reminded at each event what it means to be a conservative and why our values must be upheld.
