How Queen Elizabeth II Inspires Me – Women’s History Month

In honor of Women’s History Month, our NeW Ambassadors are sharing about the female historical figures who inspire them the most. Jennifer Fletcher, President of NeW at Stevenson University, shares why she is inspired by Queen Elizabeth II.

Which female historical figure inspires you the most?

I have felt very inspired by Queen Elizabeth II for being an emblematic woman of true commitment to duty, grace, and adherence to tradition, even in the face of wildly changing times.

What time period did she exist in? What were the major world events going on at the time of her career?

Queen Elizabeth II’s reign began in 1952 and ended on September 8, 2022, when she died at age 96. Some major world events during her reign include the Cold War, World War II, the Space Race, the Civil Rights Movement, and significant advancements in technology and globalization.

Why does she stand out to you?

Queen Elizabeth II stands out to me for being a graceful example of dedication to her role as the Queen of England. Throughout her reign, she kept her poise and ability to adapt to the changing demands of the modern world. She maintained the dignity and traditions of the monarchy in which she served. Her unofficial motto “Never complain and never explain,” was one of timeless value. Today often all we hear is complaining and over-explaining while Queen Elizabeth II wanted the focus to be on the royal family’s dedication to service.

What struggles did this particular woman have to overcome?

Queen Elizabeth II faced various challenges during her reign, including navigating many political changes. She had to manage the transition of the British Empire to the Commonwealth and faced criticism and scrutiny from the media. She experienced personal family matters and tragedies, such as the divorces of her children and the death of Princess Diana. Despite these challenges, she has remained a symbol of stability and continuity for the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.
