Chapter Spotlight: University of South Carolina

We caught up with the women from NeW at the University of South Carolina. Learn about the extraordinary work these women are doing on campus from their executive board members.

Why is NeW important to your chapter?

NeW is important to us because of the friendships and community that we are building. In today’s society, women need to know who they can trust and who they can be themselves around. NeW has allowed us to discuss important topics and become professional and confident women.

What kind of impact has your chapter had on campus?

Our chapter recently hosted Riley Gaines, and the event had a good turnout. Over 100 people showed up to listen about protecting women in sports and just women in general. This impacted our campus by raising awareness of this subject/issue. Many people did not know who Riley Gaines was, and after we shared her story with them, they understood why we were having her speak and wanted to listen to her.

What has been your chapter’s favorite event/meeting to host and why?

Riley Gaines! This was such an amazing event that we opened to the public, and it was great publicity for our chapter. We had girls come up to us wanting to join. After this event, we are very excited about what is to come for our NeW chapter and cannot wait for more women to get involved with NeW!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a chapter on their campus?

Just do it! The start may be slow, but the more events you do, especially with well-known speakers, the more publicity you will get, and women will start to join. Make the space inviting so girls feel comfortable. Don’t get down on yourself; try your best!
