Chapter Spotlight: NeW at Oakland University

NeW caught up with the women from NeW at Oakland University. Learn about the great work these women are doing on campus from their e-board members.

Why is NeW important to your chapter?
Network of enlightened Women is extremely helpful for our chapter at Oakland University. NeW National and Catherine, our Campus Program Coordinator, have been quick to answer our questions and help plan events. Catherine has been very encouraging and always provides any support we need in order to be successful and grow our chapter!

What kind of impact has your chapter had on campus?
This is the second semester of NeW on campus at Oakland University, and it is going well so far! The events have allowed for like-minded members to connect and find community, and moving forward, they can recognize a friendly face on campus. NeW’s national slogan is “educate, equip, and empower.” Women in NeW have walked away with more knowledge on educational topics, felt equipped to step into their role in society, and have been empowered with knowledge as they are surrounded by like-minded friends who all want each other to succeed. NeW at Oakland University has started lifelong friendships, builds confidence, and forms a community where women support each other in all aspects of life.

What has been your chapter’s favorite event to host and why?
So far, NeW at Oakland University has hosted a cider mill social, policy discussion, and a virtual speaker event with Emma Grimes. Our favorite event was the cider mill social at Yates Cider Mill in Rochester, Michigan. This was our first event of the semester, and it was wonderful to meet all the chapter members, get to know one another, and talk about our excitement for the semester! Each member brings a unique and diverse perspective to our chapter, and we are truly grateful for each and every member.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a chapter on their campus?
Just go for it! Conservative women need to stand strong in their beliefs and not fall prey to the anti-American ideologies. Since being on campus last semester, we have been in classes in which women have said they hate capitalism and like France’s socialist government more than the American government. One student even advised against purchasing a pair of red boots because they were “too American.” Be proud of your values and be proud to love your country! It only takes one leader to stand up for what’s right, and many will follow. Be that leader. You are confident and capable. You will see the seeds you plant blossom into something beautiful. NeW has been such a blessing to each member at Oakland University, and we are so grateful for this organization.
