Aaron Chalker is one of the most kind and down to earth people in this world. He comes from an amazing family who raised him to treat others the way you want to be treated and to respect the opinions of others, even if you happen to disagree. He is studying political science at UNC Chapel Hill.
Aaron is involved with Be the Match on Campus in his free time at UNC. Be the Match is an organization that aims to register people for the National Bone Marrow Registry. Whenever someone has certain blood cancers or other diseases, they may be in need of a bone marrow transplant. Most of the time, matches are not found within the family and patients have to turn to the National Bone Marrow Registry. The chapter at UNC is very active and is frequently holding registration drives. Aaron is at every single event he can manage to attend. While he is a shy person, he comes out of his shell when talking about Be the Match. You can see the passion in his eyes and that is almost indescribable.
For going on three summers now, Aaron has worked with the 4H camp in his local county. He sets lessons plans and never fails to have the kids in mind when planning activities. He always says “I wouldn’t have enjoyed that as a kid” or “I wish I would have done more of this when I was a kid.” He is so selfless. Even if an activity will take him twice as long to plan and execute, all he cares about is the kids. He wants them to have the best summer of their lives and return to camp each year because they love it and not just because their parents sign them up.
He hopes to go into public administration on the local level. There are many times through real world experience and through his schooling where he has thought about issues that make him passionate. He is always thinking about new things that could help local governments achieve their goals. He has even talked about teaching and educating young people about the importance of local government. We live in a day in age where everyone has negative views about politics and not many people want to get involved. It is amazing that he thinks about taking on the task of teaching young people the importance of government.
Those are just a few reasons why Aaron deserves this title, but no matter what happens I hope he never forgets just how much he helps people every single day and how grateful many people are just to call him a friend.
