Meet Shakira Jackson, president of NeW at the University of Pittsburgh.
How did you first hear about NeW?
I learned about NeW while attending a Turning Point USA Conference
Why is having a NeW chapter on campus so important to you?
My student engagement life is not very diverse when it comes to clubs, and I thought I would change the narrative. Being on a predominately liberal campus has made it hard for people with other opinions to speak up because they feel they will be canceled or disliked. Then comes me. I am not afraid to speak up for what I truly believe in.
What has been your favorite event with NeW?
Hosting a meditation night for NeW has been my favorite event thus far. I emphasized to the women that self-care is important. This was an educational as well as stress-relieving event.
Why is NeW important?
NeW is important because it creates a safe space for conservative and libertarian women to express themselves freely. I value NeW’s independent-thinking aspect and how they provide intellectual diversity on college campuses, as we need that now more than ever. I also appreciate the unique knowledge I gain from my NeW sisters, whether it is policy, professional development, and even great books. Overall, NeW is essential because of the influential leaders our organization is shaping for a better tomorrow.
What advice would you give other conservative women on campus?
Do not be afraid to embrace who you are. America is the land of the free, and God gives us strength every day to be the best we can be. It is okay to be different. Our light shines even brighter when we are. Always remember you are God’s rising star.
