Senior Spotlight: Rebecca Cutsinger, James Madison University

Congratulations to our graduating seniors and thank you for your work with NeW! We are pleased to spotlight some of our outstanding chapter leaders and members.

Meet Rebecca Cutsinger, President of NeW at James Madison University.

What were some of your favorite events that you participated in with NeW?
As the President of the JMU chapter I lead our bi-monthly chapter meetings but I also had the opportunity to take a few of our members to Richmond this semester. We met with three female cabinet members who gave us invaluable insight and advice for being a female conservative in politics. I also got to attend CPAC with our chapter and the chapters from UVA and Virginia Tech. We had a blast and made so many wonderful connections. I got to meet Riley Gaines, former D1 swimmer and advocate for protecting women’s sports. This meeting inspired my Vice President and I to host Riley as a speaker at JMU this semester!

What are your plans after graduation?
I am so excited to further my career in politics once I graduate! I will be helping a local Board of County Supervisors race in my hometown!

What advice would you give to a conservative woman starting college?
Never be afraid to speak up in class and respond to woke professors. When they make casual comments about politics that alienate conservatives make your voice heard. Ask them questions, challenge their narratives. I promise you won’t regret it. We need women to stand up in classrooms and make space for other conservative voices. We are a silent majority and when others see you hold truth to power they will join you, you’ll make friends. Don’t be afraid to make waves, you’ll move mountains!

How has NeW impacted you and prepared you for your next steps?
NeW has provided me with the opportunity to build a conservative community from scratch. I was a lone female conservative in my major dominated by loud liberal female voices. I thought I was alone. When I launched the chapter I found so many women like me waiting for someone to stand up with them, to be a loud and proud conservative on campus. I made lifelong friends and unlikely allies. I am so thankful that NeW provided me with a leadership opportunity to further the conservative movement on JMU’s campus.

Why is NeW important to you?
NeW is important to me because it gave me an outlet for my career goals. NeW provided me with tangible proof of my ability to impact others. Inspiring confidence in young female conservatives on a liberal dominated campuses is hard. We’re outnumbered, shouted down, and made to feel like we don’t belong. I was so inspired by the number of women I found on my campus that were closeted conservatives who were so excited to join NeW and build a sisterhood of strong likeminded women.
