Meet Erika Head, president of NeW at Oakland University.
How did you first hear about NeW?
I first heard about NeW while at TPUSA’s Student Action Summit in December 2020 and then I connected with NeW at CPAC 2021. To be honest, I was drawn to the NeW table because of the pink and white logo! Everyone in NeW, from the national representatives to the students across America, have been extremely kind, generous, and supportive. I never dreamed of everything that would follow that initial encounter!
Why is having a NeW chapter on campus so important to you?
Starting a NeW chapter at Oakland University has been such a blessing. NeW has allowed for policy discussion, professional development, and the making of my lifelong friends. Without NeW, I would not have found the confidence, support, or encouragement to start a chapter and speak up about my beliefs on a college campus.
What has been your favorite memory or event with NeW?
My favorite memory with NeW was our virtual speaker event with Emma Grimes. Emma spoke on practical interviewing and professional development tips, as well as building confidence and going after your goals. I also loved talking about the presentation afterwards with our chapter members, because each one of us loved something different about Emma’s presentation!
Why is NeW important?
Network of enlightened Women is important because their support and resources allow college students to be mobilized in creating a community of like-minded women. NeW brings another perspective to college campuses about issues that affect all of us, allowing women to make their own decisions based on facts.
What advice would you give other conservative women on campus?
I would tell other conservative women on campus to continue standing up for your beliefs and be yourself. Never let anyone make you feel like your beliefs are wrong or invalid. Once you speak up, others will follow you. You are a leader who is confident and capable. You will see the seeds you plant blossom into something beautiful.
