On Wednesday, November 11, chapters from The Catholic University of America and the University of Virginia collaborated to co-host a virtual speaking event with Christina Bain, a leader in the fight against human and organ trafficking. Bain currently serves as a Visiting Researcher at the Center for the Study of Europe at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University. She formerly worked as the Director of Babson College’s Initiative on Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery and the former and founding Director of the Harvard Kennedy School’s Program on Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery within the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy.
The event drew a crowd of members from both chapters, as well as some interested students who wanted to learn more about the issue of trafficking. Bain discussed her work tackling human trafficking, which currently concentrates on the role of business, entrepreneurship, and innovation, as well as converging areas of illicit trade. Bain fielded questions from students, including some about the role of the government in fighting what is called the “modern day form of slavery.”
The event was a major success; both groups not only had the chance to hear from an extremely accomplished professional about an important global issue, but also were able to connect with fellow NeW friends from a different chapter. Dual-club meetings can be a fun opportunity to meet new people and make new friends during a time when many are no longer able to interact in-person.
