THE NETWORK OF ENLIGHTENED WOMEN ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF THE GENTLEMEN SHOWCASE
WASHINGTON, DC—The Network of enlightened Women, known as NeW, named the winners for The 2018 Gentlemen Showcase: Ethan Van Buskirk from Colorado Christian University for the College Category and Devin Sena from St. Augustine, Florida, for the Under 30 Category.
Van Buskirk, a freshman at Colorado Christian University, won $1,000 to support the charity of his choice, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and a Vineyard Vines tie.
Van Buskirk’s nominator, Amy Smith from the Centennial Institute, said Ethan is deserving of the title “College Gentleman of the Year” for many reasons.
“Along with all of the community work that Ethan engages in, he takes pride in paying attention to the little things, such as thanking the police officers on campus for their service, holding the door for others walking into buildings and caring for others when he notices distress, even if he is in a hurry and does not have much time. Taking a little time out of your day to make a difference in the life of just one person, really makes a difference in the long run.”
“A chivalrous young man brings not only respect and honor to himself and his family, but brings hope and encouragement to his community,” Van Buskirk said. “I am so humbled that I have been recognized as a young man who has shown such honor and integrity in my daily walk of life that others see and know that something is different about me.”
Van Buskirk’s charity of choice has a personal impact: “My brother Luke is my life-long best friend and hero. He was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes at the age of just three. He has never let this stop him from doing anything.”
Additionally, Devin Sena from St. Augustine, Florida won a $1,000 donation to his charity of choice, Human Coalition, and a $100 Brooks Brothers gift card. Sena is a conservative journalist and contributor for The Washington Examiner.
According to Sena, The Gentlemen Showcase is important because it recognizes and honors gentlemen.
“The Gentlemen Showcase is an important competition because it changes the conversation surrounding men,” he said. “In the age of the #MeToo movement, we need masculine, chivalrous men more than ever.”
Sena’s nominator, Sydney Cuthbert, a fellow leader in Youth Ministry, said participating in The Gentlemen Showcase is important because “unfortunately, chivalry is not a common thing anymore.” She continued, “Chivalry should be acknowledged and praised. That’s why I was so excited to nominate Devin! He [Devin] is humble and is constantly going out of his way to help and encourage people. His pro-life stance speaks for all of it. He cares for the unborn child as well as for the mother and I think that speaks volumes. He was so ecstatic winning this competition JUST because that prize money would go towards saving lives.”
During February, NeW hosts The Gentlemen Showcase to recognize, honor, and encourage gentlemen across the nation. More than 100 young men were nominated in The Gentlemen Showcase from schools across the country, such as American University, Grove City College, Harvard University, University of North Carolina, University of Virginia, and Patrick Henry College.
The Network of enlightened Women is the nation’s premier organization for conservative university women. NeW educates young women on conservative principles, cultivates a community in which to discuss and strengthen these principles, and emboldens young women to speak out on campus and in their communities. NeW is identifying and educating the next generation of women leaders. In addition to campus and young professional chapters, NeW hosts an annual National Conference, hosts professional development events, including the Young Women’s Leadership Retreat, and nationally serves as a voice for conservative women.
