Congratulations to our graduating seniors and thank you for your work with NeW! We are pleased to spotlight some of our outstanding chapter leaders and members. We will miss working with them on campus but look forward to them joining our NeW Alumnae Network.
Today’s Spotlight is on Jennifer Barber, NeW member at UNC Chapel Hill. After she graduates, Jennifer plans to work with a nonprofit organization on event coordination and possibly fundraising.
Q. What is one thing you have gained from NeW?
A. One thing I have gained is definitely a sense of self-confidence. When first coming to college, I was afraid to speak my mind because I knew a lot of people would disagree with me. However, I now know that there are a lot of other people who think like me but they were just equally as scared to say their opinions. We have to confident in what we believe and speak out.
Q. How did NeW shape your college experience?
A. NeW helped me realize that it is okay to speak my beliefs even when it is the minority opinion in my classroom. NeW and all of the members of my chapter showed me that I should never wavier on what I think is right. In fact, I should fight for it.
Q. What is your favorite part of NeW? (thenewspocket.com) Your favorite memory?
A. My favorite part is the community of people I get to be around. My favorite memory was the Young Women’s Leadership Retreat. I met so many people from all over the country that I am still friends with today. We are all connected through social media and still talk frequently!
Q. What is one piece of advice you would give to other NeW members?
A. Never let people stand in your way. There are going to be times where you feel like the world is working against you and you are alone in your feelings and beliefs but lean on other NeW members and know that you are not alone.
