Senior Spotlight: Krista Chavez, NeW at American University

As we near the end of the school year, we would like to take a moment to celebrate some of the seniors we have graduating and to thank them for their hard work for NeW. Today’s Spotlight is on Krista Chavez, chapter president of NeW at American University.

Q. What is one thing you have gained from NeW?

A. The most valuable thing I gained from NeW was lifelong friendships. These women will be the ones you will start your career with, go to brunch with on the weekends, and call at 2 AM. They are the most valuable part of the NeW experience, and I truly can say that I found my best friends through this organization.

Q. How did NeW shape your college experience?

A. NeW not only have me friendships, but leadership opportunities and stepping stones for my career. Through NeW, I became a chapter president, spoke to many individuals on campus and in the community, gained a column in my campus newspaper, helped found a blog, published articles in national news organizations, and learned through an internship. All these memories were invaluable to building not only my career but my character as a proud, strong, and confident woman.

Q. What is your favorite part of NeW? Your favorite memory?

A. My favorite part of NeW is the relationships I formed with different individuals. Specifically, I will never forget bonding with my executive board. I absolutely loved brainstorming with them, baking, cooking thanksgiving dinner, and decorating for events. They gave me so much joy and help, and I wouldn’t have succeeded as president without them.

Q. What is one piece of advise you would give to other NeW members?

A. Embrace every single second of your college experience. Go to as many meetings, activities, and events as you possibly can. Introduce yourself to people and make genuine connections that will live on throughout your life. Most of all, don’t forget yourself, who you are, or where you came from, and don’t be afraid to relax and give yourself time. College is all about what you make it, and your time is the most valuable because the 4 years flash by very quickly.
