Campus Program Associate, Vanessa Rivera, caught up with chapter leader, Amelia Irvine, co-president of NeW at Georgetown University. 
How did you first hear about NeW?
I first heard about NeW when its Facebook page popped up in my newsfeed one day. I visited the website and signed up for NeW’s email list. After I attended the NeW National Conference over the summer, I decided that I wanted to start a chapter on my campus.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and why you became involved in NeW?
After starting college at Georgetown, I found my conservative beliefs sharply contested. But college liberalism only made my beliefs stronger. I became involved with the pro-life club, Georgetown Right to Life, my freshman year, and became the president my sophomore year. Right to Life Presidents traditionally only serve for a single year, so I searched for new projects to devote my energy to my junior and senior years. I am passionate about conservatism and women’s issues, so NeW seemed like a perfect fit!
What appeals to you about NeW?
NeW is a female-led conservative organization, which can be tough to find on college campuses. I love Georgetown’s College Republicans chapter, but the environment of an all-women’s group is such a good fit for me. I definitely consider myself an empowered woman, and it is so wonderful to have the opportunity to pay it forward by lifting up other young conservative women at Georgetown.
What made you want to start a NeW chapter?
Georgetown has so many wonderful opportunities to see great speakers, develop professionally, and meet fellow students. But NeW fills a special gap because it brings together conservative women, a group of people whose mere existence is often denied by the left. Conservative women are able to better support each other and get to know one another.
Why is having a NeW chapter on campus so important to you?
We’re here to let Georgetown students know that conservative women do exist! We are empowered, capable, intelligent, and ready to take the world by storm. It’s such a good way to combat the stereotypes and identity politics so prevalent on campus today.
How do you benefit from being a part of NeW? What is the best part of being involved with NeW?
NeW has given me the chance to meet so many wonderful conservative women, not just on Georgetown’s campus, but from across the USA. The opportunities that NeW National provides for professional development and networking are top-of-the-line, and I’m so blessed to be a part of the work NeW is doing.
What makes you the most excited about being a part of NeW?
I’m excited to be a part of this conservative women’s movement that is going to shape the future. NeW is helping me to take full advantage of my time in college, and I’m so happy to be involved moving forward.
