YWLR Spotlight: Meet Katie Leeper

June 30, 2017 | Diana Stancy

We are looking forward to our Young Women’s Leadership Retreat! Meet one of our 2017 attendees, Katie Leeper. Katie is from Jacksonville, Florida and will be attending Virginia Tech to study architecture. She plays varsity cross-country, soccer, and track, and volunteers at Young Life and local hospitals.

Why were you first interested in NeW’s Young Women’s Leadership Retreat?

My grandmother, a member of NeW, mentioned the opportunities available to me knowing the challenges I faced as a conservative young woman with strong opinions growing up in today’s society.

What do you hope to gain from attending NeW’s YWLR?

I look forward to connecting to like-minded young woman as I venture into this new phase of my life on my own. I hope to gain a stronger sense of self and connect with those that share the same conservative beliefs as I do so that I have a support system and other young women to lean on when our liberal generation tries to extinguish my views.

What are you most excited about in the YWLR line-up?

I am most excited to learn more about what it means to be a conservative young woman in our society and learn about the struggles women continue to face so that I can be prepared to face them this upcoming year and during the rest of my life. Due to social media, the idea of feminism and being a conservative woman in our society can be mixed up sometimes so I am excited for the sessions about feminism and how “every issue is a women’s issue”. It is sometimes hard to see the truth through all the lies about what it truly means to be a conservative or feminist woman when so many different views are in your face and readily available online at all times.

What are you most looking forward to in college next year?

I am most excited to live in a leadership dorm at Virginia Tech. I applied and got accepted into a leadership living learning community where I will be living with other students who share my same passion for leading, and who will challenge and teach me about being a great leader in society. With the help of other NeW members, I hope to start my own NeW chapter on the Virginia Tech campus so I can share the skills and confidence I gained in NeW leadership retreat with other young women.
