First of all, conservative ideology provides economic incentives. As an economics major, I am a firm believer in free trade. Governmental limitations imposed upon most markets reduce the natural incentives for buyers, sellers, and producers to trade goods and services. Conservatism is not built on making citizens financial equals; it is built on providing citizens with equal opportunity to prosper.
Secondly, conservatism is rooted in national defense. Throughout high school I competed in various oratorical competitions including the VFW and American Legion. My involvement with these organizations taught me the importance of protecting our nation. Getting to know our veterans on a personal level instilled within me respect and reverence for our nation. Although America should not be involved in every international dispute, the United States has a duty to preserve, protect, and defend American lives and values at home and abroad.
The final reason I am conservative is a personal one. I was a high-risk pregnancy. My mother was put on bed rest early on in the pregnancy and underwent frequent tests and procedures. I was an unborn child that put my mother at risk, but I believe that I have a right to life.
