Win an Oscar and lose your man?

March 18, 2010 | NeW Staff

Sandra Bullock’s recent Oscar for best performance by a female actress has been followed with some sad news about her husband.  Reports have leaked that he has been unfaithful.

Unfortunately, Sandra Bullock is not alone in this experience.  As the New York Post reports, Bullock is only one in a long line to receive the “Oscar Love Curse.”  The Post details nine female Oscar winners from the past twelve years who at the acceptance of their awards thanked their husband or boyfriend and split up within months or even weeks.

Think back to so many of those failed celeb duos like Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Affleck and Julia Roberts and Benjamin Bratt.

Maybe it’s just a coincidence.  I don’t think one could definitively argue there is a real correlation.  However, this report is indicative of Hollywood relationships and just how casual they have become.  Marriages are easily ended, celebrity cheating and affairs do not shock us any more, and gossip is to be expected.  It’s saddening to me just how common this has become.

What does this story say about American culture as a whole and our view of marriage and commitment?
