UNC-Chapel Hill Women’s Center: Off Target and Out of Line

April 20, 2010 | NeW Staff

The Women’s Center at UNC-Chapel Hill has a motto: Enhance the intellectual life and public engagement mission of the university through education, advocacy and interdisciplinary research.

To do this, the Chapel Hill Women’s Center hosts speaking engagements like, “I Heart Female Orgasm” to enhance the “intellectual life” of students.

Can someone please explain to me how understanding the “mysterious G-Spot” will enhance intellectual diversity on campus? Or, why a how-to workshop on “multiple orgasms” will increase public engagement. Why exactly are these topics explored on the college campus and paid for by Student Congress?

The event promotion explains that there is an underlying message of sexual health and women’s empowerment, which again, I have a hard time connecting that to the Center’s motto.

The reality of Women’s Centers across the United States is that they have lost track of their core mission. To support women—all women—and provide an intellectual outlet for women on campus. Women’s Centers should realign themselves with their mission by engaging the women on their campus with real empowerment. Women on college campuses need the resources to serve their community, challenge their professors, and pursue an academic degree. Women’s Center should be filling that need, not presenting workshops on orgasms.

For full disclosure, here is the event promotion on the UNC-Chapel Hill’s Women’s Center website:

I Heart Female Orgasm ( 8:00PM – 10:00PM )
