Taylor Swift and the Popular Media Bias

Taylor Swift’s short-lived romances have been a much-discussed topic for the popular media. How is it that this songwriter who spends so much time singing about successful relationships can’t seem to manage to be in one? Comedians such as Tina Fey, Chelsea Handler, and Amy Poehler cannot seem to stop poking jokes at the her inability to maintain a relationship.

Recently Chelsea Handler told Any Cohen on Andy Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live:

My theory about Taylor Swift is that she’s a virgin and that everyone breaks up with her because they date her for two weeks and she’s like, ‘I’m not gonna do it.’ And they’re like, ‘Oh, well, forget it. Then I don’t want to date you.’

University of Virginia NeW alumna and development officer of the Culture Media Institute Katie Yoder explained to Fox News,

As a young woman the same age as Swift, this ‘joke’ infuriates me. Comedians are often absolved from playing by the rules in the name of humor, but Handler goes too far here. Handler basically sends the message to young women that, ‘if you don’t want to go all the way with a guy, you’re a loser. If you don’t have sex with a guy, he’s going to leave you. She degrades women and their relationship choices while pressuring them to go all the way when it comes to guys.

Despite the fact that Taylor Swift has been through many brief relationships, she remains one of the best role models in popular culture when it comes to relationships. She is one of the few pop singers who wants her fans to maintain their dignity and now compromise on what they believe to be in a relationship. Numerous songs of hers tell of relationship woes that result when girls do in fact become too seriously involved with boys. Taylor Swift is one of the few popular female culture icons who has not released a porn video, or engaged in excessive alcohol and drug use. Through all her rise to stardom, she continually sports vintage dresses and has maintained the girl next door image.

Ultimately all the cruel comments regarding Taylor Swift’s love life are a reflection of modern society’s disdain for traditional relationships. The view that a relationship is doomed to fail if they are chaste is seen in these comedians jibes. Instead of bringing down Taylor Swift for being in numerous relationships, popular culture should instead recognize all the good that she has done in promoting healthy relationships for young girls and lay off the tasteless jokes.
