Senior Spotlight: Rachel Smith

May 14, 2014 | Alyssa Condrey

Congratulations to our graduating seniors and thank you for your work with NeW! We are pleased to spotlight some of our outstanding chapter leaders and members. We will miss working with them on campus, but look forward to them joining our NeW Alumnae Network.

Today’s Spotlight is on Rachel Smith, NeW leader at the Univeristy of Akron.

Rachel Smith, Akron

What is one thing you gained from NeW?

NeW has taught me so much about leadership, life, and standing up for yourself and others in the face of adversity. As conservative college women, we are the minority on most college campuses, and many students and faculty members do not understand our views. NeW helped me to become a better leader, and has taught me that there is never only one perspective to an issue.

How Did NeW shape your college experience?

I discovered NeW halfway through my freshman year, and I am so glad that I did.  The relationships I have gained as President of our NeW chapter are some of the most rewarding and significant ones I have ever had.  NeW connected me with like-minded women and it is impossible to express how important that is on a liberal campus. All of a sudden, I didn’t have to feel abnormal for not agreeing with the liberal rhetoric I was surrounded by and I gained powerful tools to express my own views.

What is your favorite part of NeW? Your favorite memory?

My favorite part of NeW, without question, is discussing the books, current events, and articles with the other women in the chapter. We have discussed topics ranging from the hook-up culture to the portrayal of women in social media. My favorite memories definitely come from those conversations.

What is one piece of advice you would pass on to NeW ladies following you?

I would definitely advise the NeW ladies following me to be fearless. There are so many people in this world who will try to tear you down or ridicule your point of view and it is easy to let these people get the best of us. It is so important to educate yourself and stand your ground because your views and beliefs are just as important as anyone else’s. Never be afraid to try new things and get out of your comfort zone because that’s where all the good stuff happens!

Thanks Rachel! We wish you the best after graduation.
