Self Defense is not “Icky” – It’s Necessary

November 13, 2014 | Amy Sapp

This summer, Cosmo Senior Community Manager Elisa Benson tweeted, in response to Miss Nevada’s fourth-degree black belt status in taekwondo,“I get that the college sexual assault problem can’t be solved in 30 secs but still icky to pretend like self defense is the answer.”

My response: Why not?

In an age when college campus danger is escalating and social media blasts our personal lives on the internet, what harm evolves from understanding basic self defense mechanisms to employ in times of dire emergency?

I encourage the Elisa Bensons and other women media figures of today’s society to refrain from portraying self defense as an “icky” activity and instead encourage women of every status and ideology to engage in training or activities which render her feelings of safety.

As a self-proclaimed magazine for women, I think it is time for Cosmo to start putting women’s true interests on the forefront rather than marinate on sex and beauty tips.
