President Obama to Speak at the University of Notre Dame

March 30, 2009 | NeW Staff

Since it is my fourth year, I am all too aware that graduation is quickly approaching. I have no qualms with the University of Virginia commencement speaker,J. Harvie Wilkinson III . (He recently wrote this interesting article for the Washington Post.)

A more controversial commencement speaker, believe it or not, is President Obama. This is because he was invited to speak at the University of Notre Dame, a Catholic university. The conflict stems from the fact that the Catholic Church is uncompromisingly pro-life, and President Obama is one of the most outspoken advocates of abortion. The Catholic Church has been receiving criticism for not being open minded and not staying up to date with modern times. However, to what extent can truth, if that is how one sees his beliefs, be modernized?

I will be interested to see what the President will say to the graduates come May….
