Not Trying to Be a Conspiracy Theorist….

October 23, 2008 | NeW Staff

This post is partially in response to Holly’s query about the hook-up culture on college campuses, and partially what has been on my mind lately. Recently, I have had to spend an unusually large amount of time at the Student Health Center, and I am continually surprised at what I see in posters on the wall and pamphlets on the desks. Condoms are handed out like candy (literally: via gum-ball machines). There is an overpowering pressure to, if not only promotion of, the pursuit of sexual pleasure.

The credits and discredits of this mentality and its effects on society are a huge discussion in and of itself.

However, what scares me a bit is while there is this huge freedom in the area of (more often than not) meaningless sexual pleasure, the administration as no qualms with prohibiting free speech.

While due to the appropriate public outrage, the ban was recently overturned, this tendency to protect our “right” to no-strings-attached sex, while silencing our independent voices, is a bit reminiscent of George Orwell’s 1984 , no?
