NeW Catches Up With Hannah Schuller, President of NeW At GCC

November 15, 2017 | NeW

As part of our Chapter Spotlight, NeW Campus Program Associate Vanessa Rivera caught up with Hannah Schuller, President of NeW at Grove City College!

How did you first hear about NeW?

I first heard about NeW during my freshman year when the former chapter President and Vice President invited all of the girls in one of my classes to a NeW meeting. I knew right away that it was something I would really enjoy! Joining NeW freshman year led to attending National Conference over the summer, and later becoming President of Grove City College’s NeW Chapter.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and why you became involved in NeW?

Growing up, I really loved current events and was also involved in speech and debate. As a result, my family often talked about political and world issues during family dinners! I loved that NeW would provide the same type of opportunity.

What appeals to you about NeW?

In our chapter, NeW meetings are a chance for friends to get together, drink tea and discuss current events. What’s not to love?!

What made you want to start a NeW chapter?

I actually did not start GCC’s NeW Chapter, but during my sophomore year, our NeW chapter started to meet less frequently and have fewer events. A few friends and I really wanted to see NeW continue, so we decided that we would try our best to revamp the group and keep it going!

Why is having a NeW chapter on campus so important to you?

I think it is really important to have a place to share different perspectives and ideas about what is going on in our world. One of my favorite things about our NeW Chapter is that we have girls from all sorts of different majors, including accounting, political science, engineering, education, and biology. These different interests allow us to discuss issues from completely different perspectives, which has definitely helped me to understand many things through a new viewpoint.

How do you benefit from being a part of NeW? What is the best part of being involved with NeW?

NeW has given me the chance to meet really amazing girls both on GCC’s campus, and across the nation through events such as the National Conference! I think one of the best parts of being involved with NeW is that members have so many great opportunities to attend conferences and events. Members also have ample opportunities to network with both college-aged women and other young women in the workforce.

What makes you the most excited about being a part of NeW?

I love that NeW meetings provide a fun way to learn that is very different from going to a class or studying for a test. Through being a part of NeW, not only do we get a nice break from hours and hours of homework, but we are also still able to continue learning more about important issues going on in our world in a relaxed and easygoing setting.
