Let the Countdown Begin…

September 24, 2009 | NeW Staff

Do you know what day will be here shortly?  NeW’s Anniversary.  September 29th is the big day.  We started NeW in 2004 at the University of Virginia.  NeW has grown so much since then!

In honor of NeW’s 5th Anniversary, I am going to post some stories and/or pictures about NeW over the years for the 5 days leading up to September 29th.

Today is Day 5.  I will take you back to the beginning of NeW.

Let’s begin by picturing a drawing.  Imagine a woman dressed in a gingham shirt with an apron over it.  In one hand, she is holding a cookbook.  In the other, she is stirring batter.  What is unusual about this picture is that the woman is connected to a machine that is popping out one, two, three…eleven babies.  She is a baby-making machine.

This is how NeW was portrayed on the cover of a magazine at the University of Virginia after only two meetings.

While some people were attacking us, we were moving forward with NeW.  A group of us started NeW at the University of Virginia as a book club for conservative college women.  What was the first book read by NeW?  Any guesses?  It was What Our Mothers Didn’t Tell Us: Why Happiness Eludes the Modern Woman by Danielle Crittenden.  As you might remember, Danielle was kind enough to speak at our national conference last year.

This is where it all began.
