Happy VDay!

February 13, 2009 | NeW Staff

My job is usually very pleasant. I work at a nice Italian restaurant. We have a wonderful customer base. I usually make guests smile, and they generally brighten my day as well. Apparently however, Valentine’s Day has the potential to bring out the worst in boyfriends and husbands and girlfriends and wives who are desperate for dinner reservations…

This holiday also can bring out the often dormant ultra-feminist in your average college liberal. Every year I have been at the University of Virginia, around this time of year, some students celebrate “VDAY“, as Karin mentioned. I won’t get started on our annual Valentines Day and the Vagina Monologues discussion, because I don’t really care very much for Valentine’s Day in the first place.

However, I did want to point out that I did think it was interesting that “VDAY” is being held the weekend after Valentines Day. Have the Feminist given up “high jacking” the traditional holiday? Or does this scheduling allow the average college girl to have her cake and eat it too? This weekend, she will go to dinner with the boyfriend, get flowers and dream about love. The next weekend, the traditional gender roles are out the window!
