The Governor of Pennsylvania, Ed Rendell, has gained unwanted attention this week.  He said that Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano would be a great next Homeland Security chief because she has “no family” and “no life.”  He quickly retreated.   CNN show host Campbell Brown decried this as sexist.   Taken in context, his comment has some truth to it–someone without a family or life might make a more effective top official because of the pressure and time commitment.  Before making a judgment, I wondered if anything like this has ever been said about a recently appointed top male official.  If any of our readers can find anything on this topic, please post it in the comments.   This comment also made me wonder how many single males have been appointed to top positions.  That would make an even better comparison.
