March 28, 2012 | Sarah

The NeW Gentlemen’s Showcase has had some amazing nominations so far. Here on the NeW blog we will be highlighting each gentleman to get to know them a little better and see why they should be the NeW Gentleman of the Year.

This post is focusing on Jack Loonam from the University of Georgia. He is also this year’s current front runner.

Jack Loonam

Do gentlemen still exist? Why or why not?

I think gentleman still exist. They are clouded by society’s pressures to act a certain way and if one goes against the grain, they’re not respected or are mocked for doing the right thing. So yes, they are out there, but just many have to overcome the ridicule like I have had to do and try and do the right thing.

What is the best piece of gentlemanly advice you have received?

I believe it’s a combination of advice from my parents and Football Character Ed we have for a couple minutes before each practice. Coach Lilly does a great job of taking it seriously and giving us advice in qualities that develop good character and how these qualities can be reflected in your daily life as a man, or in this case, qualities of a gentleman.

Who are your role models for gentlemanly behavior in your daily life or in pop culture?

I would have to say my Dad has been a big role model because of the way he treats his vet clients with such care and importance, making everyone feel special. My grandfather who passed away 6 years ago, also taught me at a young age how to do the right thing in relationships with girls and friends.

What is something you have done or said that exemplifies a gentleman?

One could say how I give up seats, hold the door for others, and just the little things like that constantly and be friendly as possible because I’ve learned in life the little things like that are what can take you the farthest.

Friday Feminist Fail: Requiring Stay-At-Home Moms To Work

In a recent report, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development noted that, “One of the areas of greatest untapped potential in the Australian labour force is inactive and/or part time working women, especially those with children.” That makes sense.
