On October 28th, NeW hosted the Fall Leadership Brunch featuring Emily Jashinsky at the City Tap House. Emily, a commentary writer for the Washington Examiner and former NeW member at George Washington University, offered  career advice and addressed some important issues facing conservatives today.

Along with a strong discussion about current events and what they mean for conservative women, Emily spent the majority of her discussion addressing the young women on a personal level, offering advice on how to succeed in college and in their political journey.

Emily started by encouraging the attendees to do internships, warning them not to become serial interns, hopping from company to company, but rather to establish deep and lasting connections with those they would be working with. She suggested the attendees find someone to click with and develop the relationship holistically instead of forcefully.

Emily also implored the young women in attendance to read more books, especially the early feminist texts. This is the best way to arm ourselves in the battle against liberal feminist thinkers. “It’s not enough to scroll through your twitter feed. Disconnect. Reading a book will force your mind to slow down, focus, and broaden your horizons. You’ll start to see the world in a different way.”

Lastly, Emily stressed the importance of relaxing. Too often, young people are so determined to get a job or internship or network as much as possible. While this is important, Emily reminded us that it isn’t the end of the world if you don’t have business cards at a reception or networking event. Perhaps the most valuable piece of advice from Emily was the most simple. “Be patient,” she stated, “take decisions seriously, but don’t be anxious about making the wrong decision. Everything that happens during this time in your lives is consequential but not irreversible.”

Emily is happy to provide a book list or meet any NeW member for coffee. If you are interested, please contact [email protected] and she will put you in contact with Emily.

Join NeW for our next Leadership Brunch on January 27 at the City Tap House featuring Robin Weaver, attorney and former Vice President and Chief of Staff to the president of MetLife’s international division.
