In remembrance of our country’s tragic lost on September 11, 2001, the UF Chapter of NeW sponsored the 9-11 Project on their campus. Almost 3,000 flags were displayed the entire week last week to allow students, faculty, and members of the community a time to reflect on the nine year anniversary of this horrible event in our country’s history.
Jean Morrow, a past officer of the chapter, was the coordinator of the project. She started this over three years ago along with help from the Young America’s Foundation and the support of her local legion. NeW was excited to get involved last year with the execution of the project and the vigil on September 11th.
Pictured above is the UF Chapter Vice President, Jessica Gordon, who along with many other NeW members set up the flags early on the morning of Labor Day. It was important to the chapter to get the flags up all week in order for as many students to be able to see it as possible.
During the vigil ceremony on September 11th, officers engaged the crowd by facilitating a candle lighting ceremony. A few officers read a poem, said a prayer and gave a reflection.
The event gained a lot of press in local newspapers and even had a broadcast on the local radio station, 98.1.
Go Gator NeW girls!
