Chapter Spotlight: NeW at Florida Gulf Coast University

November 7, 2016 | NeW Team

On September 20, I had the pleasure of visiting our Chapter at Florida Gulf Coast University. I had the pleasure of meeting some of the soon-to-be founding members at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in March. One of those women was Vanessa Rivera. Vanessa is leading the Chapter at Florida Gulf Coast through a successful year on a very liberal campus. In addition to campus events, Vanessa and her team of conservative leaders have been involved in our national events as well including the National Conference and Young Women’s Leadership Retreat.

I talked with Vanessa and her Executive Board, Tiffany Cahill and Sophie Studer. Take a look at what they had to say about NeW at Florida Gulf Coast and what NeW means to them.

What was the last event your chapter hosted?

We had an interview workshop on campus. We like to give different themes to our meetings so this one was all about preparing for an interview and landing a great job. We had someone from the Career Services Office come and speak to our Chapter. -VR

What does it mean to you to be a conservative?

Being conservative to me means respecting the Constitution, limiting the government, and allowing American citizens the freedom to make their own path. -SS

Being a conservative to me is believing in a small government and putting the power in the peoples hand to control their own fortunes and future. -VR

Being conservative means valuing independence, hard work and earned rewards, that you believe in self-reliance rather than government dependence. -TC

What advice would you give someone who wants to start a chapter?

Get as many of your friends as possible to help you. It makes a world of a difference when a group of passionate young women rally behind a cause. -VR

I would definitely say have a strong executive board as well as 2-3 other students that are interested. It is hard work and very time consuming, but once your chapter is established, it definitely pays off! -TC

What does NeW mean to you?

To me NeW is important because it gives young conservative women a platform to fight for their own rights on while not prescribing to the man-hating rhetoric of the left. -SS

NeW to me is a place where I can not only grow and strengthen my political views and values but it also helps me grow as an individual. -VR

NeW is a place where I can share my ideas and values without being instantly judged or criticized. It is a place where I can connect with women from all over the United States, and where I can strengthen both my political and non-political views. NeW truly shows how diverse the face of conservatism is. -TC
