This week during the Online Book Club we will be discussing Chapter 6 of Wonder Women: Sex, Power, and the Quest for Perfection, “Mythologies of Birth.”
Mother nature no longer has absolute control over procreation because modern technology has provided women the option to bear children according to their own time preference. Techniques for pregnancy now include: freezing a woman’s eggs, purchasing eggs and sperm, surrogate pregnancy, artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization and others. All of these options allow women the choice of when to conceive and some even allow women to choose the traits of the child. Spar argues most women, sometime in life, are on a quest for conception partly because birth, pregnancies, and children are apart of their very definition as a woman, but more so because most women hope to birth and nurture a child during their lifetime. Women have many choices about pregnancy today; Spar challenges them to resist the urge to “have it all,” the perfectly timed pregnancy, perfect child, and flawless birth and to focus on the realities of pregnancy and the gift of life!
We look forward to you joining our discussion this week!
