This week during the Online Book Club we will be discussing Chapter 4 of Wonder Women: Sex, Power, and the Quest for Perfection, “Bodies and Other Accessories.”
The concept of beauty and the never ceasing struggle to attain it is nothing new to women. Women often mistake physical appearance as something that can be achieved if they do a few more crunches and cut calories, rather than accepting it as a result of genetics. Spar writes that many women stop at nothing to achieve the version of beauty that men and the media have constructed in contemporary society. These efforts can be observed through female dieting, eating disorders, and cosmetic surgery. She highlights a few reasons why women go to such great lengths to improve their physical appearance citing the influence of Disney Princesses, teen movies, and the 1960s cultural shift that liberated women from the household. She also offers a solution through which women can distinguish perfection from beauty!
We look forward to hearing your comments this week!
