This week during the Online Book Club we will be discussing Chapter 10 of Wonder Women: Sex, Power, and the Quest for Perfection, “Kissing Charlie Goodbye”.
The feminist movement sought to equalize both men and women in terms of their opportunities and roles within society. However, while the movement brought about equal pay, increased sexual and reproductive choices, and more realistic beauty norms for women, it also increased women’s expectations for themselves exponentially. During the years following the movement, women accelerated their quest for perfection and “having it all”. Spar analyzes and comments on the biological differences between men and women and women’s choices regarding careers, marriage, and children in relation to the feminist movement. She concludes with suggestions for the future of the women’s movement and offers readers a thorough answer to her book’s pivotal question: can women really have it all?
