University of Florida NeW Chapter Update

The University of Florida NeW women have had a busy spring semester! This year we have been reading The Politically Incorrect Guide to Women, Sex, and Feminism by Carrie Lukas. The book has enabled us to talk a lot about social issues and we’ve been incorporating what the Women’s Studies Center and Health Center on campus say about the same issues.

Last week, eight of our members were fortunate enough to attend CPAC. We had an absolute blast and it’s something we’ve looked forward to since last year. We are ready to pack our bags again for CPAC 2012 as well as another NeW Dessert Party!

On our campus, most of the professors are liberal and our Women’s Studies Center and Health Center promote the hook-up culture and feminism, and throw personal responsibility by the wayside. It’s something we struggle with everyday on campus. Whether ‘flavored contraceptives’ are being thrown in our face on the way to class or the women’s studies center having a huge feminist speaker, feminism is clearly alive and well on our campus.

In order to combat this, we hold biweekly meetings and network with other organizations on campus. This week, we had STRIVE, the counseling and wellness group at UF, come and speak with us about our violence against women chapter we read for this week. NeW women at UF are stronger than ever…and we are looking forward to more exciting things coming our way this year-including icecream socials, volunteering and an etiquette workshop!

Great news about the UF NeW events! An etiquette workshop sounds so exciting 🙂 Looking forward to hearing more about your campus events.
