This week’s Valentine’s Day The Bachelor episode involved an itsy bitsy teenie weenie red bikini. Well a few. The Bachelor brings up issues about modern dating in an intense atmosphere but it also shines a mirror on what’s happening in media and society as a whole. This episode was the perfect example of the prevalence of sexuality in the media.
For the last group date of probably the entire season, the women were woken up at 3 a.m. and taken to a remote beach location. Then, they were told they would have the chance to be in Sports Illustrated
. The date turned into a photo shoot in red bikinis….expected…but then, it took an unexpected turn.
Two of the women took off their tops for Brad and the pictures…..then the other woman took suggestive photos in the waves. It was as if they were so easy to persuade, that they would do anything to make Brad smile….and do anything the photographer told them to do in order to make a good shot.
There aren’t many women who have the opportunity to be in Sports Illustrated but there are many women that are faced with the pressures of promoting their sexuality in order to get ahead…in relationships, work, etc.
Are shows like The Bachelor really a mirror of our society? Or, is it actually an influence, that makes women feel as if this is what they have to do in order to get ahead?
