The NeW Gentlemen’s Showcase has had some amazing nominations so far. Here on the NeW blog we will be highlighting each gentleman to get to know them a little better and see why they should be the NeW Gentleman of the Year.
How do you define a gentleman?
There are three main qualities that define a gentleman: honesty, respectfulness, and an ingrained willingness to go out of his way for others. A gentleman is always honest and does what is right. He is not sneaky or shady, but open and truthful. He will not cheat, steal, or lie – ever. A gentleman is always respectful, making sure to be as polite as possible…These are the qualities I model my life after and strive to become, and not for the sense of entitlement, just for the sheer joy I gain from being able to make others smile, even if only for a small fraction of their day.
What is the best piece of gentlemanly advice you have received?
The best piece of gentlemanly advice I’ve received has probably been the cliché saying to “treat others as you’d like to be treated”. My mother use to say this all the time while I was a child. She instilled in me a nature to only do the things that I would wish for others to do. This can be especially enlightening in lieu of having a bad day. Generally I’d want someone to make me smile when I’m feeling down, so I try to make someone smile at least once every day just in case they’re not having the best day. Boy Scouts also helped with this aspect, teaching us to perform a “good turn daily.”
Who are your role models for gentlemanly behavior in your daily life or in pop culture?
My grandpa served as my ideal role model. He lived his life as a means of service for others. Most of his activities, including work, were to assist my grandma and the rest of my family. When he would take me golfing, he would constantly remind of how much he loved my grandma and how she cared for the rest of the family. He would make sure that I let her know I appreciated everything she did for us.
What is something you have done or said that exemplifies a gentleman?
Since my grandpa’s passing, I have devoted a lot of time to my grandma. I spend many evening and weekends making the short trip down the highway to her house to mow her lawn, clean her house, or do repair work. Many times when I arrive she won’t let me help out until I’ve had some dinner with her or tried a bite of her latest bakery concoction (which always ends up delicious). Not only does this help out my grandma, but also it is constantly teaching me how to maintain a house from a structured standpoint as well as heartfelt and loving standpoint.
