Abstinence: Mission Impossible?

As Karin has mentioned, the buzz around Bristol Palin has been considerable. The press has been pouncing on her assertion that abstinence before marriage is "just not realistic at all". The irony is that as of late it seems we are all about pursuing unrealistic goals in this country. Our President has promised to "create 2.5 million jobs by 2011" and "make college affordable for all Americans "and even that: "We can have universal health care by... the end of [his] first term". However, when it comes to the less fun sounding objectives, such as abstinence, we seem to get cold feet. Where is the optimistic Left when we need them?
Karin is onto something in the need to look at what is happening on a deeper level. How has culture changed in such a way that many young girls like Ms. Palin think abstinence is not an option? Are they right?
